florida private investigator ce requirements

US Capitol building with dramatic sky and flag.

The state of Florida does not mandate continuing education (CE) to renew standard Private Investigator (Class "C" or "CC") licenses. Investigators only need to file a renewal application and pay required fees to the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Division of Licensing every two years.

However, there are two common exceptions where CEUs are required:

  • Voluntary Certifications: If you hold the Florida Board Certified Investigator (FBCI) designation through the Florida Association of Licensed Investigators (FALI), you are required to complete 24 hours of continuing education every two years. This must include at least 1 hour of PI-related ethics.
  • Agency Operations: The state requires qualifying managers (Class "MA" license) or agency owners to maintain a deep knowledge of Chapter 493, Florida Statutes. While not statutorily mandated to track hours, active CE is highly recommended to stay compliant with changing privacy laws.
