Georgia private investigators (registered employees) must complete 16 hours of continuing education (CE)every two years to renew their license. The biennial requirement includes:

  • 12 hours of industry-related training (up to 4 hours can be firearms-related)
  • 2 hours of ethics
  • 2 hours of homeland security

Key Renewal Guidelines

  • Deadline: Licenses are renewed bienially by August 31 of odd-numbered years.
  • Exemptions: If you obtain your first registration during the second year of a renewal cycle, you are exempt from CE requirements for that first initial renewal.
  • Rollover: Extra hours cannot be carried over into the next renewal cycle.
  • Audits: You must complete your hours through Board-approved or distance-learning providers. You self-certify during online renewal but must keep certificates on hand for an audit.

Submitting Your Renewal

To process your CE credits and submit your renewal, you can utilize the Georgia Secretary of State's online GOALS Portal. If selected for an audit, you will submit Form 31 alongside your completed training certificates.
