NORTH CAROLINA PRIVATE INVESTIGATor CE REQUIREMENTS

City skyline at dusk with illuminated buildings.

North Carolina private investigators (PIs) must complete 12 hours of continuing education (CE) during every two-year licensing period before license renewal. A maximum of 6 hours can be completed through self-paced, asynchronous online courses; the rest must be earned in-person or via live, virtual instruction.

Key Requirements & Limitations

  • No Carryover: Extra CE hours earned during your licensing cycle cannot be rolled over into the next renewal period.
  • Registration vs. Licensure: These CE requirements apply to licensed private investigators. Registered employees (associates or support staff) typically do not have these mandatory CE requirements.
  • Approved Providers: All courses must be approved by the North Carolina Private Protective Services Board (PPSB).

Approved Ways to Earn Credits

  • Conferences: You can earn the full 12 hours by attending approved industry events, such as the North Carolina Association of Private Investigators (NCAPI) Fall Conference.
  • Online / On-Demand: You can earn credits right here with PPSB approved courses.
  • Board Meetings & Seminars: You can also earn credits by attending PPSB meetings or specific training sessions that cover G.S. 74C legal updates and industry standards.

Proof of CompletionTo receive credit, you must sign an attendance roster (for in-person events) and obtain a CE Certificate of Completion. This certificate must be submitted alongside your Licensee's Statement of Continuing Education Hours with your renewal form
